Windows Nearby Sharing: Send a File Between Two PCs

Use Windows Nearby Sharing to move a document between two nearby PCs, choose the correct recipient, and confirm where the file was saved.

Enable the feature on both computers

Open Settings > System > Nearby sharing on each PC. Choose whether to share with your own devices or everyone nearby. My devices uses your Microsoft account. Everyone nearby makes your PC name and Bluetooth address available to nearby devices.

Send a document

  1. Find the file in File Explorer.
  2. Select Share from the toolbar or the file’s right-click menu.
  3. Choose the receiving PC.
  4. On that PC, accept with Save or Save & open.

Check the receiving folder

In Nearby sharing settings, use Save files I receive to if you want to choose a different destination. Supported Windows PCs can transfer over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Microsoft describes Wi-Fi sharing when the devices meet the requirements and use the same private network.

Use the right feature for the recipient

This Windows feature is for sharing between PCs. For an Android-to-Windows transfer, use a suitable workflow such as Quick Share between Android and Windows.

A careful first transfer

Our suggestion: begin with a harmless test file and place the two computers where you can read both screens. Check the recipient’s device name before accepting. Open the received file and compare it with the original before moving a larger set of documents.

When several laptops are nearby, avoid guessing based on a generic name. Ask the recipient to confirm the name shown on their machine. This small step helps prevent a routine transfer from becoming a confusing search for a missing file.

Close the loop

Move the received copy into its final project folder and keep the source until the transfer is verified. If you temporarily used Everyone nearby, return to the narrower setting afterward. For repeated transfers, agree on a folder and naming pattern so both people know which copy is the latest.
