Windows 11 Battery Report: Read Capacity and Usage Together

Generate a Windows 11 battery report and compare capacity with recent usage before drawing conclusions about your laptop’s battery runtime.

Generate the report

Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator and approve the Windows prompt on your own PC. Enter powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. Windows prints the path of the generated HTML report.

Open the saved file

Use File Explorer to go to that location, then open the HTML file in your browser. Microsoft suggests starting with Installed battery, Recent usage and Battery usage for information about estimated capacity and usage.

Read more than one number

Our suggestion is to record the report date and the way you used the laptop that day. A long video call, a demanding application and light document editing are not equivalent workloads. Runtime observations are easier to interpret when you know what the machine was doing.

Look at capacity information alongside the usage sections. Treat the report as evidence to help you investigate, rather than turning one figure into an immediate replacement decision. If you are comparing reports over time, keep the files with their dates in the filename.

Make a repeatable comparison

For a practical test, choose a familiar task and keep the screen brightness, connected accessories and working conditions reasonably consistent. Note when you start and stop. You do not need to run the battery to exhaustion to make a useful comparison of your everyday experience.

Use the manufacturer’s guidance for the next step

If the report and your normal experience suggest a problem, check the laptop manufacturer’s diagnostic and service guidance. A software report does not replace an inspection when hardware is behaving abnormally. If the battery is swollen or the enclosure is distorted, stop using the device and seek appropriate service; do not press or puncture it.

Keep the report for reference

Save the file somewhere easy to find and record any relevant change, such as a battery replacement or a different workload. That history is more informative than generating several reports in a row and expecting the underlying condition to change.
