Chrome Reading Mode: Make Long Articles Easier to Follow

Use Chrome Reading Mode to simplify a long article, adjust its text presentation, and keep the original page available for missing context.

Open an article in Reading Mode

On a computer, open the page, right-click and choose Open in reading mode. You can also find Reading mode through Chrome’s More tools menu. Google documents both a full-screen reading view and a side-panel option, depending on the interface and settings.

Adjust the reading view

Use the available controls to choose a typeface, font size, color theme and spacing. These changes apply to Reading Mode’s text, not to the entire browser or the website’s original design.

Try read aloud if useful

Desktop Reading Mode can read text aloud and offers voice and speed controls. Test a short section first to choose a pace that is comfortable for the material.

Know when to return to the original

Reading Mode is not compatible with every site or format. Interactive maps, forms, image galleries, video-heavy pages and other complex content may not work as expected. Keep the original page available when a chart, caption or interactive element is important.

Build a comfortable reading setup

Our suggestion is to adjust one thing at a time: font size first, then spacing, then color if needed. Read several paragraphs before deciding whether a setting helps. A style that looks attractive for a heading may not feel comfortable over a long article.

If you are taking notes, record the source title and link separately. A simplified display is still a presentation of the original material, so keep enough context to return to it later.

Check before quoting or acting

When a detail matters, compare it with the original page. Verify the surrounding paragraph, table heading or image caption rather than relying only on an isolated line. For everyday reading, the simplified view can reduce visual clutter; for a task that depends on layout or interactive controls, the full page may be the better workspace.
