Your Android default browser is the browser selected for web links handled by Android’s default-app system. Choosing it explicitly is helpful when several browsers are installed and you want a predictable starting point.
Choose the browser
Open Settings > Apps, then Default apps or Choose default apps. Select Browser app and choose the browser you want. Menu wording can vary between devices.
Install the intended browser first. Select it by its full name rather than assuming that the first item in the list is the app you have been using.
Run a small test
Open an ordinary website link from a note or message you control. Check which browser appears and confirm that it matches your selection. Use a familiar, non-sensitive page; signing in is unnecessary for this test.
Recognize the boundary
Some apps display web content within their own interface. An embedded page is therefore not a reliable test of every default-browser behavior. Links associated with particular installed apps may also behave differently from general website links.
If one link opens unexpectedly, return to the default-app setting and confirm your selection before making further changes. Use a second ordinary website link to distinguish a general problem from the behavior of a specific app or destination.
Keep the choice practical
- Check that familiar pages display comfortably.
- Locate downloads and bookmarks before relying on the browser.
- Remember which browser holds an unfinished form.
- Review the default if you later remove that browser.
Changing the default is a routing choice. It does not automatically migrate bookmarks, open tabs, or preferences from another browser. Handle any migration separately, check the items you actually need, and keep the older browser available until you have verified your usual workflow.
