iPhone ZIP files are useful when several documents belong together. The Files app can create an archive and open it again, giving you a straightforward way to prepare a small package before sharing.
Create the archive
Open Files and choose a location such as On My iPhone or iCloud Drive. Tap More, choose Select, and select the files. Use More at the bottom right, then Compress.
A single selected file produces a ZIP with the same name. Multiple files produce an archive named Archive.zip. Touch and hold the archive and choose Rename to give it a descriptive name.
Name it for the recipient
Choose a name that explains the package without opening it. For example, a project name and a short description are more useful than Archive-final-new. Keep the name concise enough to read on a small screen.
Check what you created
Tap the ZIP file to create a folder containing its extracted files, then open that folder. Check the file names and open the important documents. This small check helps catch an omitted attachment or an outdated version before you send anything.
- Confirm the package contains only the intended items.
- Remove private working notes from the selection before recreating an archive.
- Check that similar file names do not hide duplicate versions.
- Keep the original documents until you are satisfied with the package.
Use the right expectation
Think of the ZIP as a container for related files. Its main benefit in this workflow is keeping the group together. Do not assume that every collection becomes dramatically smaller or that packaging files makes their contents private.
When a recipient needs just one finished document, sending that document directly may be simpler. Use an archive when the relationship between several files is itself useful.
