Turn iPhone StandBy into a useful desk clock, choose a readable view, and review notification previews before leaving your phone on display.
Start StandBy
Open Settings > StandBy and enable it. On conventional iPhone models, lock the phone, connect it to a charger and place it stationary on its side. Swipe horizontally between widgets, photos and clocks, then vertically through available styles.
Understand display behavior
Supported Always-On displays can keep StandBy visible. On other models, you can wake the display by tapping the screen, gently nudging the table or using Siri. Available display settings vary by model.
Review nighttime and notification options
StandBy settings include Night Mode, which uses a dimmer red presentation in low light. Review Show Notifications and Show Preview on Tap Only so the display shows the level of detail you want.
Pick the view from your normal seat
Our suggestion is to select a simple clock first, then sit where you normally work and check it at a glance. A layout that looks attractive while held close may be difficult to read from the other end of a desk.
If you choose photos, consider who else can see the screen. For a shared work area, a clock or neutral widget may be more suitable than a rotating personal photo display.
Make the physical setup comfortable
Place the phone on a stable stand with the charging cable routed so it will not be pulled across your workspace. Avoid a position that makes you reach over a drink or repeatedly bump the device while typing.
Try it for a normal workday
Check whether the view helps you or simply adds another distraction. If notifications keep drawing your attention away, revisit the preview settings. Keep the setup simple and adjust only the part that is not working for you. StandBy is most useful when it supports a routine you already have, such as checking the time between tasks.
