Windows 11 Voice Typing: Dictate a Draft and Edit It Well

Use Windows 11 voice typing to get a first draft onto the screen, then review punctuation, names and numbers before sending it.

Start in an ordinary text field

You need an internet connection, a working microphone and a cursor inside a text box. Press Windows + H and wait for the listening indicator before speaking. Select the microphone button or use a supported stop-listening command to pause.

Choose the correct input language

Voice typing follows your input language. Use Windows + Space to switch, and add a language through Settings > Time & language > Language & region if needed. Check Microsoft’s supported-language list rather than assuming every installed language is supported.

Review the typing options

The voice-typing settings include automatic punctuation and microphone selection. Windows voice typing uses online speech recognition, so choose a suitable place and document for your test.

Dictate ideas in short sections

Our suggestion is to begin with a short paragraph in a draft document. Speak the idea naturally, stop, and reread the result. This gives you a chance to correct recurring recognition errors before they appear throughout a longer document.

Do not try to solve wording, formatting and proofreading all at once. First capture the idea. Next organize the sentences. Finally check the details. Separating those steps often makes a rough spoken draft easier to turn into clear writing.

Check the details that matter

Compare names, email addresses, dates, amounts and technical terms carefully. A sentence can sound right while containing the wrong number. Read the text as if you were the recipient, rather than assuming that the words on screen match exactly what you intended to say.

Keep manual editing available

For tables, code or tightly formatted text, use the input method that gives you the most control. Voice typing is a convenient option for prose, not a requirement for every task. Before sending or publishing, complete the same review you would give to a manually typed message.
