iPhone offline maps are most useful when you prepare them before the moment you need them. A saved destination is a starting point; a downloaded area and a quick test make a more practical travel setup.
Check availability and download an area
Apple Maps supports offline downloads on iOS 17 and later, but availability and features vary by region. Downloads occupy phone storage.
- Open Maps and search for your destination.
- Open its place card, then choose Download, or More > Download Map if offered.
- Adjust the area and review its size.
- Start the download and allow it to finish.
You can manage downloaded areas through your picture or initials beside search, then Offline Maps.
Review download and storage settings
In Offline Maps settings, you can limit downloads to Wi-Fi, keep automatic updates enabled, or use Only Use Offline Maps. Optimize Storage can remove unused downloads automatically. Downloaded areas can also be renamed, resized, or deleted.
Offline maps provide supported directions and saved place information without Wi-Fi or cellular service. Availability varies, and a downloaded area is not worldwide coverage.
Choose an area around your actual journey
Our planning suggestion is to write down three points before choosing the download boundary: where you arrive, where you stay, and the places you intend to visit. Include the roads or neighborhoods between them, plus a reasonable margin for a detour.
For example, a map centered tightly on a hotel may leave the airport outside the selected area. Compare the boundary with the whole journey rather than only checking that the hotel pin is visible. If the file is too large, reconsider which parts of the trip you really need to carry offline.
Test before leaving a reliable connection
Try a route between two places inside the downloaded area using the offline-only setting. Check the start point, destination, and the travel mode you actually intend to use. Then restore your preferred setting.
Do this while you still have time to fix a missing area. A successful download message and a usable route answer different questions: the first confirms the file arrived, while the second checks your own travel plan.
Keep a small backup plan
Record the address of your accommodation separately and keep a practical charging plan. Review the downloaded area again shortly before departure, especially if your itinerary changes. If offline downloading is unavailable for your destination, prepare another suitable navigation option before travelling rather than discovering that limitation on arrival.
