Chrome Memory Saver: Keep Important Tabs Active

Use Chrome Memory Saver to reduce inactive-tab memory use, while keeping the sites you rely on available through the exceptions list.

Enable Memory Saver on a computer

Open Chrome’s menu, choose Settings > Performance, then enable Memory Saver. Inactive tabs can be deactivated to free memory and reload when you return to them. These performance controls are for desktop Chrome, not its Android or iOS apps.

Choose the level that fits your work

Moderate waits longer before deactivating tabs; Balanced takes a middle approach; Maximum deactivates sooner. Start with Balanced, then judge the result using your normal browsing session.

Add important sites as exceptions

Under Always keep these sites active, select Add and choose the sites you need. Activities such as calls, audio, active downloads, partially completed forms and connected devices can also prevent deactivation.

Do not confuse a reload with lost internet

If an old tab reloads when you revisit it, that may be expected Memory Saver behavior. Check whether the problem is limited to inactive tabs before changing your network setup.

Use a focused comparison

Our suggestion: keep your usual set of tabs open for an afternoon and note which reloads interrupt you. Add only those necessary sites to the exception list. Excluding every site removes much of the point of the feature.

Before a long writing session, make sure your work is saved in the service you are using. A browser performance setting should not become your only plan for protecting an unfinished draft. Close tabs you no longer need, and keep bookmarks for pages you want to read another day.

Revisit the settings later

If the browser feels comfortable, leave the configuration alone. If tab reloads are too frequent, try a less aggressive level. The aim is a usable workspace, not the smallest memory figure at any cost. Compare the same type of work rather than a video-heavy day with a day spent reading plain text.
