iPhone Back Tap: Set a Screenshot Shortcut and Test It

Set up iPhone Back Tap for screenshots or another useful action, then test the gesture before making it part of your everyday routine.

Check compatibility

Apple describes Back Tap for iPhone 8 or later with iOS 14 or later. Keep the phone’s software current before troubleshooting missing or inconsistent options.

Assign an action

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch.
  2. Choose Back Tap.
  3. Select Double Tap or Triple Tap.
  4. Choose Screenshot or another available action.

Double- or triple-tap the back of the phone to run the action you selected. Back Tap can also trigger accessibility features or a shortcut.

Start with one gesture

Our suggestion is to assign only one action at first. Take a few test screenshots while holding the phone normally, then open Photos and check the result. A simple action makes it easier to learn the gesture without wondering whether a more complex shortcut completed correctly.

Watch for accidental triggers

Use the phone as usual for a day. If screenshots appear when you did not intend them, reconsider the gesture or choose a less intrusive action. You do not need to keep an assignment simply because it worked in a short test.

A shortcut should make a frequent task easier. If it repeatedly interrupts your use of the phone, change the assignment instead of trying to adapt every movement around it.

Choose a second action only if useful

After the first gesture feels comfortable, consider whether a second one solves a real problem. For example, a frequently used accessibility control may be more valuable than a novelty action. Keep the two gestures distinct in your mind and test them in the situations where you expect to use them.

Before sharing a screenshot

Open the captured image, confirm it shows the intended screen, and check for unrelated information around the edges. A fast capture method can make it easy to share more than you meant to. Crop or retake the screenshot when necessary, and keep the shortcut as one small part of a deliberate workflow.
